That topic being myself.
In the first couple of weeks of class, the professor mentioned Marsha Richins and Scott Dawson’s 18 statement scale for measuring materialism. She also mentioned later that a lot of students shared their results on their blogs and I've been feeling left out.
Anyway, there seems to be 2 types of questions in this survey: Materialistic and Non-Materialistic. I will colour-code the questions and present a score for each.
Materialism first!
Scale: 1=strongly disagree, 2=disagree, 3=not sure, 4=agree, 5=strongly agree
2-I actually...don't understand when someone pays more than 20-30$ on a piece of clothing. I don't really understand the appeal of luxury cars. But I do like to look at nice houses. I wouldn't want to own one though, think of all the rooms I have to maintain!
2. Some of the most important achievements in life include acquiring material possessions.
4-Being able to own your own car, your own house, being able to buy your own food and groceries are what I feel important milestones. My parents bought my food and clothes for me since they owned the money in the household. I enjoy the freedom to buy what I like now that I have my own income.
5. I enjoy spending money on things that aren’t practical.
8. My life would be better if I owned certain things I don’t have.
4-Gotta admit, sometimes I'll be working on something and I'll think I wish I had a machine to make it easier.
9. The things I own say a lot about how well I’m doing in life.
3-I guess...? Consumption of certain goods go down and spending on normal and luxury goods do up as you increase your income, so I guess it would be a good indicator...?
10. I like to own things that impress people.
2-I sure hope my work is impressive. (Not this stuff, they're just doodles.) Other than that...not really.
13. Buying things gives me a lot of pleasure.
4-I do feel pretty good about getting, say, a new book or article of clothing, especially if it's been a while. But sometimes I buy something just because I'm curious and if it turns out less than what I was expecting, I get buyer's remorse.
14. I like a lot of luxury in my life.
3-I can't really say. I guess it's because when I think luxury, I think excess, which I guess I never really experienced.
17. I’d be happier if I could afford to buy more things.
5-Living paycheck to paycheck isn't fun, lemme tell you.
18. It sometimes bothers me quite a bit that I can’t afford to buy all the things I’d like.
5-Replace sometimes with all the time and you got it. I would really appreciate having even a little disposable income after all my bills and debt payments and spending on food.
Anyway, it's kind of a popular thing in the art community to do little surveys and draw your responses to them, so that's how I got the idea....Anyway:
End Score = 35/50 = 70%
Eh...what can I say?
